Historical info:

This kit was inspired by the Sears Modern Home 161, The Niota. Sears maintains an excellent archive website where you can see the original House 161 catalog page (and to see how I've taken some liberties with it.)

A great source of information about the Sears Modern Home series can be seen at the Sears Archive Pages

I expect to release more kits soon based on this series. Let me know if you have any favorites.

These kits are laser-cut wood parts with etched details. No door or window castings are required or provided. All trim detail is etched into the wood.

Some skill or experience in building wood kits is helpful as well as some creativity in assembling, painting and detailing.

Included in the kit:

  • A sheet of 1/16" laser-cut wood containing all the wood parts required.
  • 3/64" milled angled trim for finishing corners.
  • A length of strip wood to create a band around the exterior above the foundation line.
  • Chimney casting (plastic.).
  • Peel & stick Ultra Shingles roofing from New Rail Models
  • Downloadable Instructions.
To be offered in future kits:
  • Acetate for windows with printed mullions.
  • Assorted fun junk to clutter the yard as our plastic casting skills improve.
  • Extra stripwood to trim around the windows, doors, etc as desired. (Not required but preferred by some modelers. Trim lines are etched into the wood.)
What's not included:
  • Glitzy (and costly) packaging.
  • Eye-popping (and costly) advertising.

'Catalog House 161'

Pre-production model by Col. Jim Marksberry
Jim is a master modeler and created his own colorful shingles shown here.
They were printed on typing paper and glued to the roof.
